Profile of San Diego Area

The forest fires are taking place all through California. One place where the damage is very serious is San Diego, California. San Diego has a desirable climate to many people. In the last few years the community has made an effort to make the citizens more prepared for emergencies. The San Diego has been joining organizations on a national, state and local level to educate the community. The reason for doing this is that the people realize that disaster comes with out warning and these programs make people more ready to handle a disaster when it strikes.
San Diego is a large community with a population of about 2.5- 3 million in 2006. In 2006 there were about 1,200,000 households. The forest fires damaged many of these homes and all of them were affected. It is the seventh largest city in the United States. The city has about 2,000,000 million people who are white and about 150,000 African Americans. The Latino population in San Diego is 800,000. In 2006, the average household had about 3 people.
In 2006 there were about 1 million people over the age 16 who were in the work force in San Diego. One of the most popular industries in San Diego is the educational services/ health care industry. There is some poverty in San Diego but many of the people living there are well off. For example, in 2006, 8.1% of families were living in poverty. Also in 2006, there were about 70,000 people who were unemployed. 153,000 households had an income between $150,000- $199,000. 57,000 households had an income between $100,000- $149,000. Less the 100,000 households had an income between $25,000- $34,999.

The city has a wide variety of landforms. San Diego is a bay and has miles of shorelines. Also it consists of mountains, fertile valleys, canyons and dense forests. The mountain ranges located in and near San Diego are called the Peninsular Ranges. The summers are cool and the winters are warm due to the air from the Pacific Ocean. The area of San Diego is 342 square miles.
In 1988 the San Diego City Council created the Environmental Services Department. This department was created in hopes of helping the community and in hopes of improving San Diego’s long-term waste removal process. The department is also looking for the most efficient ways to reduce and recycle the amount of waste in the city. The department created 3 separate divisions: Waste Collection Services, Waste Reduction and Disposal Division, and Energy, Sustainability and Environmental Protection division. This is only one example of the many programs people have created so that they can have good contact with the environment.
